Powerbox Launches the POWERBOX Digital Interface (PDI)
News, Pressrelease
New communication and control platform enables intelligent monitoring, diagnostics and remote control of compatible power supplies.
Powerbox (PRBX) announces the launch of the POWERBOX Digital Interface (PDI), a configurable communication and control platform that enables intelligent monitoring, diagnostics, fault management and remote control of compatible POWERBOX power supplies.
Available in separate CAN and I²C versions, the PDI enables compatible power supplies to communicate with external control systems for monitoring, control and fault management. It provides system designers with a practical way to integrate proven power supplies into digital control architectures without redesigning the power supply.
As systems become more connected, customers need more than just a reliable power supply. They also need visibility into how their power systems operate within the overall application, as well as the ability to monitor key parameters and control selected functions remotely. The PDI has been developed to meet that need by linking digital control systems with the existing monitoring and control functions of compatible power supplies.
Through the interface, host systems can monitor output voltage, output current and temperature, as well as access status signals and fault conditions. The PDI also supports Remote on/off, relay functions, and adjustment of supported power supply settings, including voltage regulation and current limiting where the connected power supply supports it.
“Reliable power remains the foundation of every system, but customers increasingly need visibility, control and diagnostic information from their power infrastructure,” said Anders Arvidsson, Product Manager. “With the PDI, we are extending the capabilities of compatible POWERBOX power supplies and giving customers a straightforward way to add diagnostics, monitoring and control capabilities into their applications.”
An important part of the PDI’s functionality is its handling of external fault events. When the External Major Fault input is activated, the interface generates an isolated fault indication, sends a Remote-off signal to the connected power supply and sets voltage and current setpoints to zero. This provides designers with a defined response to external fault conditions at system level.
The compact interface is designed for use in demanding environments and supports a 10–80 VDC input range with reverse-polarity protection. It is specified for operation from –40°C to +100°C baseplate temperature, supports humidity levels up to 95% RH non-condensing, is designed to meet IEC/EN 62368-1, and is RoHS compliant. Measuring 38 x 25 x 142.5 mm and weighing approximately 33 g, the PDI can be integrated into space-constrained systems where digital connectivity and system-level visibility are increasingly important.
The PDI is compatible with a broad range of POWERBOX power supply families, including OFI1200A, OFD1200A, OFI700A, AEA Series, PCA Series, HCA Series, HFA Series, GHA Series, DCS Series and TUNS1200 Series. This gives customers a common monitoring and control interface across multiple power platforms, helping simplify system integration while building on proven products. Calibration and configuration are required for the intended power supply and application.
In addition to supporting standard products, the PDI can also play a role in custom power solutions. Its communication, monitoring and control functions can serve as a basis for application-specific developments where customers require more tailored functionality. Beyond the currently available CAN and I²C versions, additional protocol support and interface adaptations can be evaluated together with the Powerbox engineering team.
Potential applications include industrial automation, robotics, rail and transportation systems, marine electronics, energy infrastructure and other high-reliability electronic systems where monitoring, diagnostics and remote control of power functions are required.
