Powerbox Supports Research in High-Power-Density Power Electronics and DC-DC Converters

News

At Powerbox, innovation happens when academic research and industrial expertise come together.

Through our collaboration with Mid Sweden University, ENIT, and the STC Research Centre’s IRS TransTech initiative, we are supporting advanced research into high-power-density power electronics and DC-DC power conversion technologies through the PhD work of Rayen Selmi.

Rayen Selmi’s research focuses on the design and control of efficient, high-power-density, wide-voltage-range isolated DC-DC converters for future energy systems. A key area of investigation is Unbalanced-Flux Magnetics (UBFM), an innovative approach that aims to improve the utilization of magnetic materials while enabling more compact and higher-power-density power conversion solutions.

As industries continue to pursue greater efficiency, electrification, and sustainability, advances in power conversion are becoming increasingly important. Technologies such as those being explored in this research have potential applications across electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, energy storage, industrial electronics, and data centers, where reliability, efficiency, and power density remain critical requirements.

Bridging Research and Real-World Engineering

For Powerbox, participation in collaborative research initiatives is about more than advancing technology. It is about connecting academic innovation with practical engineering challenges and helping innovative ideas move closer to real-world implementation.

As an industrial partner, Powerbox contributes application expertise and engineering insight while benefiting from close collaboration with researchers working at the forefront of power electronics. These partnerships create valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange and provide early visibility into emerging technologies that may help shape future power architectures and energy conversion systems.

Supporting Future Power Electronics Talent

For Rayen Selmi, one of the most valuable aspects of the project is the opportunity to combine academic research with real-world industrial relevance. Through collaboration with Powerbox, he gains exposure to real-world engineering challenges while contributing to research that could influence future power conversion technologies.

The collaboration also reflects our commitment to supporting the next generation of engineers and researchers. By bringing together universities, research centers, and industry partners, initiatives such as IRS TransTech create an environment where scientific research and practical engineering can develop side by side.

Working closely with Rayen throughout the project, Mats Wärdemark, Team Lead R&D Sweden at Powerbox, sees significant value in bringing together academic research and industrial expertise.

“Collaboration between industry and academia is essential for driving innovation in power electronics. By working closely with Rayen and the research teams at Mid Sweden University, ENIT, and STC Research Centre, we gain valuable insights into emerging technologies while helping connect research with real-world engineering challenges. These collaborations also play an important role in developing the next generation of engineering talent.”
