Master Thesis – Drivers for WBG power electronics semiconductors
With headquarters in Sweden and operations in 15 countries across four continents, Powerbox serves customers all around the globe. The company focuses on four major markets – industrial, medical, transportation/railway and defense. Powerbox is recognized for technical innovations that reduce energy consumption and its ability to manage full product life cycles while minimizing environmental impact with the most talented people sharing their knowledge and engagement to success and offering a Master Thesis opportunity.
The power semiconductor market is currently dominated by Silicon-based power devices, but this is changing quickly and the power devices based on Wide-Band Gap (WBG) materials, such as Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN), have shown better performance in certain applications. SiC diodes already have a strong market position, but various types of SiC transistors are also on the market and are gaining acceptance in the power electronics industry.
The aim of this project is to study the driver circuits for the new WBG semiconductor switches suitable for DC/DC switch-mode power converters. The work will include theoretical pre-study of the known driver circuits for different WBG devices. In the second stage, the work will focus on the practical implementation of one driver circuit for SiC and one for GaN power device. These driver circuits will be analyzed in detail by performing simulations and experimental tests.
You are expected to be an electrical engineering student specializing in power electronics. It is beneficial to have experience in tests and verification of electronics, PCB design, and simulations of power electronics.
Project period and remuneration
The project work is a cooperation between Powerbox AB in Gnesta, Mid Sweden University and RISE Acreo.
The work could be carried out at these three locations (Gnesta, Sundsvall or Stockholm/Kista) over a 6-months period. Planned start for the project is in June.
An 18 800 SEK remuneration will be paid at completion of the work.
